A door hanging lower on one side almost always means a cable problem. Garage door cable repair deals with the steel lines anchored at each lower corner of the door and wound onto drums at the ends of the spring shaft. They carry the spring's lifting force, so when one snaps, slips off its drum or frays through, the door tilts, jams in the track or drops unevenly.

A loose cable is usually a symptom. The tech looks for what caused it: a worn spring losing tension, a rusted bottom bracket, a drum with a cracked groove, or a door that came off its rails. Fixing the cable without the cause brings the problem back. A tilted door that has also left the track is covered under off-track service.

Cable work we do

Cables are under load whenever the springs are wound. Each step below is done with the tension controlled, not with the door propped on a ladder.

Cable replacement

Damaged cables are removed and new ones of the correct length and thickness are installed. We replace both sides together so the lift stays even and the door doesn't pull crooked.

Re-spooling slipped cables

A cable that jumped its drum can sometimes be re-wound if it isn't kinked or frayed. The tech checks the full length before deciding to reuse it.

Bottom bracket replacement

Brackets at the door's lower corners anchor the cables. Salt and moisture rust them out, and a weak bracket can let go under load. Corroded ones are swapped.

Drum and bearing check

Cable drums and shaft bearings are inspected for cracks, wobble and wear, since a damaged drum will keep throwing cables.

Common causes of cable failure

01

Rust and corrosion

Road salt tracked in on cars and water pooling at the threshold attack the cable ends and bottom brackets first. Garages that take in wet, salty cars all winter see it most.

02

Spring problems

A broken or weakened spring lets the cable go slack. Slack cable can jump off the drum, then bind or snap when the door is moved.

03

Obstructions and impacts

A door that closes on a bin, gets bumped by a car, or comes out of the track twists the cables. Even when they don't snap, the strands can kink and weaken.

Signs of a cable problem

Cables rarely fail without warning. Look for these clues.

  • Door hangs lower on one sideOne cable is loose, stretched, or off its drum.
  • Strands sticking out near the bottomThe cable is fraying and could snap under load.
  • Loose cable dangling by the trackIt has come off the drum or detached from the bracket.
  • Rust-colored cable endsCorrosion has set in at the lower anchor point, weakening the strands.
  • Door jerks or shudders while liftingUneven cable tension, often from wear on one side.

Safety first. Bottom brackets hold the cable under full spring tension. Loosening their bolts or trying to hook a loose cable back on the drum can release that force suddenly and cut hands or throw tools. If a cable is off or frayed, don't run the opener. Leave the door where it stopped and keep everyone away from the door until it's secured.

Cable repair with Carter

Cause found, not just the cable

We look at springs, drums and brackets to find why the cable failed, so the same problem doesn't return a few weeks later.

Phones answered 24/7

A cable can fail late at night with the door half open. Call any time and a person will take your details.

Parts sized to your door

Cable length and thickness depend on door height and weight. The tech measures and matches them rather than using a generic replacement.

Local to North Jersey

We work across Hudson County and North Jersey, and we know the salt-heavy winters that eat at cables and brackets in garages around here.

FAQs

Garage Door Cable Repair FAQs

Can I just put the cable back on the drum myself?

We'd strongly advise against it. The cable is tied to the spring's tension, and rewinding it means working with that tension under control. Mistakes can cause the door to drop or the spring to unwind violently. The tech has the bars and clamps to do it safely.

Only one cable snapped. Do both need replacing?

Both cables have done the same work and been exposed to the same rust and wear. A new cable on one side and an old one on the other can also stretch differently, leaving the door uneven. Replacing the pair keeps the lift balanced.

Is a frayed cable an emergency?

It isn't safe to keep using the door. A frayed cable can snap without warning, and the door may then drop on one side or jam in the track. Stop using it, keep the car out of the opening if possible, and call to schedule a repair.

What causes cables to come off the drum?

Slack is the usual cause. That can come from a weak or broken spring, a door that hit an obstruction, or a door that was lifted while a cable was loose. The tech checks spring tension and drum condition along with the cable to stop it from happening again.

Do you fix other parts if they're damaged too?

Yes. Cables, springs, rollers and tracks are often damaged together. If your door needs more than a cable, we cover the rest in the same visit. Other problems are described on our garage door repair page.
