What we fix

Garage door & gate services in Newark

Newark needs a wide mix: overhead doors on small rowhouse and alley garages, sliding and swing gates protecting driveways and lots, spring and cable repairs, and openers for houses with attached garages in the North and West wards.

Ward by ward

Different housing in every ward

In the East Ward, the Ironbound is known for small apartment buildings and rowhouses, with garages that open almost straight onto the street. Clearance is the constraint. A wall-mount opener can free up ceiling space in a low garage, and a door that rises cleanly matters when the sidewalk is right there. Up in the North Ward, the Forest Hill Historic District is a different world of colonial houses with detached garages behind them.

West Ward sections such as Vailsburg and Ivy Hill mix duplexes, townhomes and single-family houses; some Vailsburg homes were built between 1945 and 1960 in Dutch Colonial and Victorian-inspired styles. Weequahic, in the South Ward, has its own historic district of colonial homes. Garages from those eras tend to need the same checks: tired springs, openers without photo eyes, doors that were never insulated, and frames that have shifted around the opening.

Why Carter

Gates and doors in a dense city

On a Newark lot, a working gate is often the main line of security, and it takes a beating from daily use. Carter repairs gates and garage doors alike, so the sliding gate across the driveway and the door behind it can be diagnosed together. Calls are answered 24/7, and our technicians work across Newark's wards.

How it works

Three steps from call to fixed

  1. 01

    Call and describe the problem

Describe the symptom, any noise you noticed and your town. A photo or short video by text helps the tech bring the likely parts.

  2. 02

    We look and explain

On site, the tech finds the actual cause, shows you what wore out or broke, and lays out the repair options so you can choose.

  3. 03

    Fix it and test it

Once you approve, the work gets done, then the door or gate is cycled, balanced and safety-tested while you watch.

Gate work

Gate repair and replacement

Sliding gates usually fail at the rollers, the track or the operator's drive gear; swing gates fail at hinges and posts. Ice in a track or a bent bottom rail can stall a slider completely. We check alignment and the drive first, then talk through whether gate repair will cover it or a bigger fix is due.

A new gate earns its cost when the frame is rusted through, or when the operator can't be brought up to current entrapment protection standards. If replacement is the answer, we explain swing versus sliding for your driveway width and slope, and what operator and safety sensors each layout needs.

Climate split

Where the cold line runs through town

Newark sits on a climate boundary. The January freezing line that separates humid subtropical from humid continental conditions runs roughly along the New Jersey Turnpike, right through the city. In practice, that means winters swing between rain, sleet and hard freeze, and garage hardware sees all three. Springs stiffen, ice forms in gate tracks, and salt from the highways ends up on every driveway.

Federal rules have required entrapment protection on residential garage door openers made since January 1, 1993, in most homes two small beam sensors mounted low on the tracks. An opener with neither photo eyes nor a hold-to-close wall button likely predates that rule and is due for replacement. For newer units, a pre-winter visit to swap worn rollers, lubricate hinges and test the auto-reverse is worth doing.

FAQ

Newark garage door questions

Short answers to what people ask before they book a visit.

Talk to a technicianOpen 24/7Mon–Sun, Open 24 hours(201) 645-7407See all questions →
My Ironbound garage has very little headroom. What opener will fit?

Ask about a jackshaft opener. Instead of a ceiling rail, this motor is fixed to the side wall and drives the torsion bar itself, so it suits garages with very little room over the opening. It requires torsion springs and a nearby outlet. We measure headroom and side clearance first.

Do you repair sliding gates on Newark driveways and lots?

Yes. We replace worn rollers and guide wheels, straighten or re-align tracks, repair operators and reprogram remotes and keypads. We also test the photo eyes and edges that stop the gate if something is in its path.

My opener is very old and has no sensors. Is that a problem?

It is. Openers without photo eyes or a reversing system likely predate federal safety rules, and they can close on a person, pet or car. We recommend replacing it, and we'll show you openers that fit your door and garage.

Do you work in every part of Newark?

Yes, all five wards: North, South, East, West and Central. Tell us the neighborhood and the type of property, whether it's a rowhouse garage, a detached garage or a gated lot, and we'll plan the visit around it.

Can I call at night if my garage door won't close?

Carter answers 24/7. A door stuck open is a security problem, especially on a street-facing garage, so call and describe what's happening. We'll tell you whether it's safe to close it by hand and arrange the repair.

Door or gate acting up?

Call any hour or send the form. We'll go over the problem and book a visit.
